HIGH PEAKS Report June 19 - 28, 2025

Conditions across the High Peaks have stabilized this week. After a rainy spring, we’ve finally seen consistent weather with only light precipitation and a series of mostly dry, pleasant days. Trail conditions reflect that change. While mud is still present in the usual places, many routes have dried out considerably, especially at lower elevations. Blowdown is still an issue on lesser-traveled trails and herd paths, but the 46er's and DEC crews have been actively clearing key corridors.

That said, hikers should be aware of significant heat approaching. Temperatures Monday through Wednesday (June 23–25) will soar into the 90s. This is a serious concern, especially for those considering strenuous high-elevation hikes. Staying off trail during the peak of this heat wave isn’t a bad idea. Also note:

The Garden Parking Lot will be closed June 23–25 for major road repairs. -Current Conditions by Mountain or Range

Nippletop, Dial Surprisingly little mud and an overall. Most muddy areas wear near summits and could be rock-hopped. Bugs picked are picking up. Mud was widespread above 4,000ft, especially near Nippletop, with one report of sinking calf-deep.

Mount Marshall Wet pine branches soaked hikers along Indian Pass and Cold Brook Pass routes. The descent was slick, but views at Avalanche Lake redeemed the effort. Mud present, but nothing impassable.

Dix Range Macomb slide was dry, Grace was mostly clear with isolated deep mud. Beckhorn gave traction issues; hikers reported sliding on rock slabs. Bug pressure variable. Grace Slide was dry and in good shape. Mud present but avoidable until Grace, where it deepened. Lillian Brook Cutoff was filled with blowdown but passable. Clear skies made for standout views.

Pinnacle Traverse Mostly dry across the full route except on the NW section of Elk Lake-Marcy trail. Colvin Range between Blake and Pinnacle had heavy blowdown.

Colvin and Blake Trails were in good shape, usual mud on the ascent to Blake. Blowdown between Dial and Nippletop observed, with stewards actively clearing it. Campsite options near Elk Pass were limited but workable.

Seward Range Trail was wet, sloppy, and buggy at higher elevations. Mosquitoes and black flies were aggressive. Lower elevations relatively dry. Blowdown not extreme but persistent.

Street and Nye Water crossings were low and simple. Mud was minimal. Bugs were a nuisance, but overall a smooth hike.

Marcy, Gray, Skylight

Van Hoevenberg was still wet and pretty muddy; gaiters recommended. Trails to Gray and Skylight similar.

Giant Mountain Muddy in a few places, but mostly fine. Descents were slick and caused slips, especially with limited visibility. Bugs mostly absent..

-Weather Outlook and Trail Impact (June 20–28)

Saturday will see a high of 82°F with a chance of scattered thunderstorms and rain, mainly in the evening and overnight into Sunday morning. Expect humid conditions but pleasant evenings.

The real concern begins Monday. From June 23–25, the region will see highs in the 90s with heavy humidity. These days could pose serious heat-related risks for hikers. Hydration, shade, and proper pacing are critical. In many cases, postponing hikes may be the safest call.

Later next week, temperatures will return to the mid-70s, with occasional cloud cover and a few isolated rainstorms. Bugs will likely be more active following the heat spike and residual moisture.

Once again, The Garden parking lot will be closed June 23–25. Consider alternative trailheads such as Marcy Field or the Loj. This closure may reduce traffic in the Johns Brook Valley area, which isn't necessarily a bad thing given the heat.

Plan wisely, hike early, and be conservative with your goals next week. The trails will still be there when things cool down.

Great information. Many times it's not so much the heat as it is a deadly heat/humidity combo. It's often best just to wait instead of trying to outsmart nature!
