Colden via Lake Arnold Trail 7/15

Fortunately, the other trail up Colden is operational, so I left from the Loj and climbed the east side of Colden. The trail was actually very muddy and wet, with several slippery rocks and deep puddles. As a gaiters-enjoyer I felt fine, but this hike would not have been fun in trail runners. There were at least 2 sections with knee deep(for me as a 6’6” guy) mud and risky sticks to walk over it. Unfortunately I didn't have time to investigate the mud slide on avalanche pass, but I’m grateful for the HikeADK alert yesterday because otherwise I would have had an unpleasant surprise on my hike.

Have you seen the Facebook posts? Definitely one, possibly two slides on Avalanche Lake trail toward Colden, trail not passable. There are pics, but it won't let me upload them here for some reason.

Street and Nye 7/14

My friends and I hiked Street and Nye today, and had a great time. The trail was not actually that muddy, and the river crossing was fine! I took large steps, but to the left was a good route that only had one ankle deep step necessary. I was grateful for mud gaiters, but it really was not that bad overall and still seems fairly dry.

Best time to do Santaoni Range?

Hey! New here! Currently have done 17/46 High Peaks. Just did Dial, Colvin, Nippletop, and Dial last weekend and Big Slide yesterday. Wondering what the most ideal time is to do the Santaoni range as I know it is known for its remoteness and mud. Is one time of year better than the other? Thanks!

If you want to avoid the mud, consider a winter hike. Just don't attempt right after a storm. It's not a guarantee that it's been broken out. That can make for a LOOOONNNG day.
