Allen Questions
Hello everyone! I am excited to post on this platform for the first time. I am planning on hiking Allen the weekend of July 11-13 and had a few questions about the trek.
First, I’ll be hiking at a slower pace with my dad, so given that, do people recommend doing the trip as 1 long day or camping along the route?
Second, for those who have stayed overnight on the Allen trail before, where do you recommend looking for tent campsites? Yes, I am aware of private land restrictions, the 150 foot rule, bear barrels and no fires.
Last, I know there is the traditional route that tracks North, but AllTrails also shows two others, one running in the middle and a Southern one. Obviously taking the AllTrails map with a grain of salt, are these legit routes and has anyone done them? Which is the best/should I take
Thanks a ton!

Hey man! Thanks for posting. Hopefully we’ll get more engagement as time goes on.
I speak on the other routes on the Allen guide. On map, they look really good, but they are deceiving. There are many things about them that make them more difficult and longer. So I would 100% recommend to stay on the original path north. Also, I would assess previous Hike times to really gauge if you think this hike will take you more than 14 hours. 16 hours at most… With the average Hiker taking somewhere around 10–12 hours. I have seen people primitive camp on this route, but most of the time they stay right off to the side of the trail and is kind of annoying.
However my recommendation for primitive camping would be at one of the intersections where the trail meets an abandoned logging Road. You passed several of them, and many of them would make for a good primitive camping spots if you walk down them at least 150 feet. If you do spend the night, let me know if anything creepy happens! JKJK… But also seriously let me know if anything creepy happens…
