Route Guidance
Trail Overview
Middle Settlement Lake is a strong western Adirondack wilderness-lake destination near Old Forge and Thendara. The hike moves from roadside access into young forest, then gradually into a more mature northern hardwood setting before reaching the lake. Hikers go for lean-to country, quiet water, and a classic Ha-De-Ron-Dah Wilderness feel without needing a High Peaks-style climb.
Access
The trailhead is on Route 28 west of Old Forge and Thendara, with parking on the south side of the highway and the trailhead sign and register on the north side. The commonly used Scusa Trailhead is a large Route 28 parking area.
Seasonal Notes
No reservation or fee is listed in the current source material. Check posted trailhead guidance and seasonal access conditions before heading out.
Cautions
The route begins with a Route 28 crossing from the parking area to the trailhead and register. Wet-foot conditions may be possible on the longer loop option; use the primary out-and-back for the standard destination route.
