Primary Short Route
Primary Short Route
The shorter and steeper Mount Jo option from the Heart Lake / Adirondack Loj area, often paired with the Long Trail to make a loop.
Route Guidance
Mount Jo is a compact Heart Lake-area hike with two common route options: the steeper Short Trail and the more gradual Long Trail. It is short by Adirondack standards, but it still has roots, rock, steeper pitches, weather exposure, and parking logistics to consider. For many hikers, it is a useful first look at the High Peaks landscape without committing to a full High Peaks ascent.
Start from the Heart Lake / Adirondack Loj area and follow the Mount Jo signs from the property trail system.
The Short Trail is steeper and rougher; the Long Trail spreads the grade more gradually.
Open ledges provide classic views over Heart Lake and toward the High Peaks.
Route Options
Mount Jo can be hiked by the steeper Short Trail, the more gradual Long Trail, or a loop using both options.
Access
This hike begins on ADK Loj / Heart Lake property. Parking is paid; check current parking details during planning.
