Primary Route
Primary Route
Start from Adirondack Loj, follow the Van Hoevenberg route through Marcy Dam and the main Marcy corridor, then climb steadily toward the open summit cone. Marcy can be climbed alone or used as the first summit in the longer Marcy, Skylight, and Gray route.
Selected route access
Paid Adirondack Loj parking; arrive early and verify current parking rate.
Selected route caution
Marcy’s upper mountain is exposed to wind, cloud, ice, and fast weather changes. Do not treat the final summit push casually, especially if continuing toward Skylight, Gray, Four Corners, or a long interior return.
Route Guidance
Mount Marcy is New York’s highest summit and the central anchor of the High Peaks. The standard Adirondack Loj route is long, steady, and increasingly exposed near the top, with summit weather that can feel very different from conditions at Marcy Dam.
Mount Marcy is one destination with multiple approaches, so route options stay grouped beneath the same guide page.
Compare the listed approaches by access point, length, exposure, and commitment before choosing a route.
Verify parking, access, weather, alpine conditions, and route details before committing to a Marcy hike.
Route Options
Mount Marcy stays as one destination while its established approaches are handled as route options beneath the same page.
Access
Adirondack Loj and Garden access use paid or limited parking. Elk Lake has seasonal/private access considerations. Check current parking, shuttle, road, and access rules before choosing a Marcy approach.
Seasonal Notes
Alpine exposure, winter conditions, mud season, and storms can materially change the seriousness of this hike.
