Route Guidance
Trail Overview
Sand Lake is a deep backcountry pond objective in the Five Ponds Wilderness, reached by long trails rather than a simple day-use path. The route context includes the High Falls Loop, Sand Lake Trail, Oswegatchie River corridor, lean-tos, beaver-influenced wetland sections, and several interior ponds. Hikers go for remoteness, camping potential, and a quieter wilderness experience more than a single scenic overlook. The trip is best planned as a long day for experienced hikers or as part of a backpacking route.
