Route Guidance
Trail Overview
Shelving Rock Mountain is one of the more approachable summit objectives on the east side of Lake George. The route follows a wide old-carriage-road-style path through the forest, then uses a short lookout spur near the summit area for the strongest view payoff. It is a useful Lake George hike when you want moderate mileage, easier footing, and a scenic summit without a major climb.
Access
The summit trailhead is past the falls trailhead in the Shelving Rock Road area. Use one of the designated parking areas; parking is not allowed along Shelving Rock Road.
Seasonal Notes
Lake George Wild Forest is generally open year-round, but road, parking, and storm conditions can affect the Shelving Rock area. Check current notices before heading out.
Cautions
Trail markers end at the peak area, and hikers can become disoriented when wandering around the summit or view area; keep track of the return route.
