Santanoni Range

My wife and I are more than half done with the 46 High Peaks. We want to get the Santanoni Range overwith sometime between now and mid-October, and we're looking for advice our our possible plans.

  1. One option is to try for all 3 peaks in one hike, but with a backup plan to orphan one of the peaks if we're behind schedule and miss our turnaround time. What route would you take and which peak to possibly orphan?

  2. The other option is to plan to do the range in two hikes from the outset. Does it make sense to hike Santanoni as an out-and-back via the Express and do Panther and Couch another day?

I haven’t read any of the other comments. But if I was in your situation, if you think there’s a likelihood that you won’t get all three, then I would personally purposely split it up into two different hikes.

In the situation I would simply just do one day that is reserved for Santa via the express, and then do a second trip that is to couch, via Panther Brook up and panther.

If you are to attempt to do all three, the thing with panther is that it’s literally a quarter mile off the trail, so if you go and do couch, you’re passing it regardless. So if you orphan couch, you’re gonna have to bypass panther a second time anyway.
